Georgian Town House Mansard Roof
The roof of a Listed Georgian house in Clifton, Bristol had collapsed in the middle and the main contractors wanted to replace it with a modified design. The original roof was of mansard construction containing two valleys, and the Conservation Officer insisted that the roof be reconstructed to the original historic design using as much of the original materials as possible.
Wessex Restoration were able to dismantle the roof and rebuild it using many of the old timbers. This complex job involved replacing the purlins with specially made flitch beams, together at 600mm centres made of pre stressed tanalised sawn timber sandwiching a flat plate of mild steel bolted every 600mm.
